How I see a Soldier!

The Final Inspection

The soldier stood and faced God, Which must always come to pass. He hoped his shoes were shining, Just as brightly as his brass. ‘Step forward now, Soldier, How shall I deal with you? Have you always turned the other cheek? To My Church have you been true? The soldier squared his shoulders and said, “ No Lord, I guess I ain’t. Because those of us who carry guns Can’t always be a saint. “ I’ve had to work most Sundays, And at times my talk was tough. And sometimes I’ve been violent, Because the world is awfully rough. But I never took a penny, That wasn’t mine to keep…Though I worked a lot of overtime, When the bills got just too steep. And I never passed a cry for help, Though at times I shook with fear.. And sometimes, God, forgive me, I’ve wept unmanly tears. I know I don’t deserve a place, Among the people here, They never wanted me around,Except to calm their fears. If you’ve a place for me here, Lord, It needn’t be grand. I never expected too much, But if you don’t I understand.

There was a silence all around the throne, Where the saints had often trod. As the Soldier waited quietly, For the judgment of his God. “ Step forward now, you Soldier, You’ve borne your burdens well, Walk peacefully on Heave’s streets, You’ve done your time in Hell.”

Please take a moment today and pray for our troops. Our soldiers sacrifice so much more than a home cooked meal and downtime with friends. Sometimes, their service costs them their family, their sweet hearts and even their faith. Take it from me, they need your prayers. Thank you!

Sincerely, Donna Louise Young, A Soldier's Wife

God's Word to A Soldier!

Dear Soldier,

Merry Christmas! I am writing to you today in response to a burden God has laid on my heart. One recent morning, while opening my bible, the pages landed on Isaiah, Chapter 52 . Although I had read this chapter many times before, this time the verses carried with them a new weight on my shoulders.

As I put my bible aside, God called to mind a documentary I had watched not so long ago. It aired on the Public Broadcast System (PBS). http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/badvoodoo/

In the documentary, United States Soldiers openly spoke of what it felt like to fight in a war zone. As their words echoed in my head, I felt my heart begin to ache. One Soldier spoke of his constant feeling of fear. He said,"You can't see the enemy firing at you. We're like sitting ducks out here!"

Another soldier spoke about feeling lonely. He said, "Since I have been out here, my girlfriend has broke up with me. I guess this was all too much for her to handle."  Still, one soldier expressed the reason he no longer believed in God. He sadly announced, "I used to believe in God. I prayed everyday. But after praying for safety one day, one of my best friends was killed. How can I still believe in God?"

While I remembered what these Soldiers had said, I allowed my thoughts to drift back to those painful memories from my own past. Then, while feelings of fear, loneliness and disbelief resurfaced, I began to pray, "Lord, if you want me to reach the hearts of these brave men and woman, Give me the words to speak."

Immediately, I had the desire to run to the computer and write the following letter to you. I pray that God will reach your heart this Christmas with His words of Comfort and Love. May He keep you safe and bring you back home soon!

My Child,

Let not your heart be troubled. John 14:1
I am your helper, so you need not fear. Besides, what can mere people do to you? Hebrews 13:5-6If you trust in Me, you will find new strength. You will soar high on wings like eagles. And you will run and not grow weary. You will walk and not grow faint. Isaiah 40:31.

Humble yourself under My mighty power, then at the right time, I will lift you up in honor. Give all your worries and cares to Me, for I care about you. 1 Peter 5:6-7 I have swept away your sins like a cloud. I have scattered your offenses like the morning mist. Oh, return to Me, for I have paid the price to set you free. Isaiah 44:22

I will turn your mourning into joy. I will comfort you and exchange your sorrow for rejoicing. Jeremiah 31:13.So work willingly at whatever you do, as though you were working for me rather than for people. Remember that I will give you inheritance as your reward, and that the Master you are serving is Christ. Colossians 3:23-24

Don't worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell Me what you need. My peace will guard your heart and mind as you live in my Son, Jesus Christ. Philippians 4:6-7. I am your refuge and strength, always ready to help in times of trouble. Psalm 46:1. I am your shield, saving those whose hearts are true and right. Psalm 7:10

So be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid and do not panic before them. For the Lord your God will personally go ahead of you. He will neither fail you nor abandon you. Deuteronomy 31:6

A Soldier's Christmas Prayer

A SOLDIER'S CHRISTMAS PRAYER

As Christmas Day approaches and you begin to feel alone,
know that a stranger is praying for you back home.

I thought about sending a cell phone
and writing you a card,

but knowing just what to say
would have been much too hard.

I may not know your name
Still, I know my prayers are heard.
I'll use the bible to guide my heart, my thoughts, my every word.

I pray for peace, your safe return and of course God's mercy too.
I'll ask God to bring you close, I'll pray this prayer for you.

"Be near our men Lord Jesus, I'm asking You to stay,
Close by them forever and love them I pray!
Bless all our Dear Soldiers, while there far away,
not only at Christmas but EVERYDAY!"

Merry Christmas and Thank you for your Sacrifice!

Happy Veteran's Day to all of our Soldiers. You are in my prayers!

I woke up early this morning to our little Chihuahua licking my face. I wondered, "What time is it?" I glanced over at the clock on the Charter Cable Box. 6:00am? That can't be right! I took a second look. Wow! As my military husband would say, "It's O'Dark Early!"

Almost immediately, I remembered today is Veteran's Day, September 11. I began to create my mental to do list. So much to do today. I have to remind people about the book launch so that I can raise relief funds and help out our local troops returning from war. I want to bake a cake for the homeless family I met yesterday. But most of all, I need to spend some time with my own family. My husband wants to go to Apple bees for a free military meal. I hope I can fit it all in. I started to pet our family dog for a few minutes. Then I kissed her cheek and brushed her aside. I was ready to begin my day.

Unlike usual, I checked my email before grabbing my bible and a cup of coffee. I figured, "I still have plenty of time before anyone wakes up." In my email box, was a daily bible verse. Today's verse was 2 Corinthians 2:14. The verse spoke to the Victory we faced when obeying God's will. I thought, "Maybe I will be Victorious today with the book launch. Surely the Good Lord knows my heart and how hard I have tried to please Him with this effort."

Next, I read a disheartening email from Samaritan's Purse about a bombing to a refugee camp in South Sudan. Suddenly, I thought of of our young men and woman out in a desert surrounded by bombs and my chest began to hurt. As God would have it, I instantly recalled a documentary I watched over a month ago. The film makers relied on behind-the-scenes footage from front-line soldiers in Iraq. What broke my heart while watching this program was a comment from one particular soldier. He said, "I don't believe in God anymore. I prayed everyday that He would keep us safe, and then I lost a few of my buddies to road side bombs! So, why should I pray?" I remember thinking, "If I could only give this soldier a bible, then God could answer those questions directly. Then, HOPE would stand a chance!"

crying soldier
Suddenly, my daily to do list was replaced with concerns that were no longer about me. I decided that today, I would spend some extra time on my knees in prayer. I would pray for the Soldiers who had given up on believing in God. I would pray for those who have lost all hope.

In the past, when God answered my prayers, it was just after I had poured my heart out to Him. So, I promised myself today, what when I prayed, I would pray with a mother's heart, because I have taken on the roll of mother to a soldier whose family lives in my apartment complex. I will pray as a wife, because I am a wife of a soldier. I will pray as a daughter, because am a daughter of a military father. And, I will pray as a granddaughter to two Veteran grandfathers. But mostly, I will pray as a BELIEVER, because I trust the Lord when He says, "And whatever things you ask in prayer, believing, you will receive (Matthew 21:22)."

With all of my heart, I wish a Happy Veteran's Day to all of our Soldiers. You are in my prayers and will continue to be!

God is refining us!

Determined to finish working on liquidating our belongings, I resolved to spend the day at our storage unit. When I arrived, I put the CD 'Revelation' by Third Day, in my car's compact disc player. Then, I grabbed the first box.

The first thing I pulled out were some of LeeRoy's old check stubs. I set those aside to shred later and reached in again. The next item I pulled out, was a copied CD that read, "Sleep." I sat back on heels and stared at the disc. My throat began to close and my eyes welled with tears. Could my husband have been trying to sleep without the prescribed medication that caused him to hurt me on that terrible night? I wondered, "When did he get this CD? How come I never knew he was trying alternative methods of resting peacefully?" Could he have tried this for me?

Then, I reached into the box again. This time, I pulled out a key chain. I read the key chain. It said, "Just For Today." Then, I turned it over and read the other side. It said,"NA Welcome." I remembered that two and a half years ago, I gave my husband an ultimatum. I demanded, "Go to an NA (Narcotics Anonymous) meeting, or I am filing for divorce."  Unbelievably, he went!

I started to think about how much easier it might have been to just divorce me back then. Instead, my husband began attending church and sought help from a 12-Step program. He even began to attend counseling. At one point, it seemed that all he did was attend meetings and church. What an incredible change from the man who gave me the silent treatment when I would approach the issue of addiction or speak about God. I tried to take the moment in. And, praised God for my husband's willingness to change.

As God would have it, in that very moment, the song, "Mountain of God" began to play. At first, I found myself singing along. I dug further in the box, not really thinking about the words that came from my mouth. But, when the artist sang,

"Sometimes I think of where it is I've come from
And the things I've left behind
But of all I've had, what I possessed
Nothing can quite compare
With what's in front of me."

I began to sob! I just sat there, my hands raised and covering my face. I thought about how far my husband and I had come in our walk with Christ and in our marriage.  I uncovered my eyes and looked up! In that moment, everything we possessed just looked like "stuff."

When I gained my composure, I called my husband. I said, "I love you." He quickly responded, "I love you too!" I shared with him what just happened. The moment turned into another treasured memory. I think we both realized now, that it's the connection we feel to each other and the fact Christ dwells in us both, that brings us joy. All the rest, really is just, "STUFF."

Only the Lord could have known I would write a book!

Apologies From a Repentant Christian

I have never thought to myself, "Maybe, I'll be a writer someday!" In all my life, I never heard someone suggest that I should write, not a teacher, professor, parent, no one. Only the Lord could have known that someday, I would pour my heart out on pages of paper.

In my personal testimony, I wrote about my feelings and experience in learning to walk a righteous path by God's side.  I didn't worry how ugly my past would sound, or how embarrassed I would feel to hear someone say, "How could you?" I just typed what came to mind and moved me to tears.

Since the book's release in March, many copies have been distributed. Surprisingly, not once has someone said anything negative about my past failures. Instead, I have heard, "Your words touched my heart!" Amazing! And, hearing Pastors say, "I couldn't put the book down," makes me want to keep telling my story.

Writing allows me to focus on what God is doing in my life. And, I love carving out time to be with Him. When I don't make time to journal what He has done for me, I miss Him.

So, today, I write to thank God for using my hands to pen His words and for helping me to sharing with others His story for my life. Only God could have known how beautiful my story would become.  Thank you Lord! I love you!

An Unforeseen Friend. Thank You Lord!

Psalm 23:6 "Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me All the days of my life; And I will dwell in the house of the Lord Forever." (NKJV)

Another unforgettable moment spent serving God involved a woman, who at the time, lived down the street from me. One morning, I received an unexpected call from a neighborly woman. We had first met sometime during the year prior while standing outside a kindergarten classroom door. Her son and my son were in the same class together.  I often noticed that she and her young son walked to school. So, one day, after kissing my son goodbye, I offered to give her a return ride home. When she politely refused, I said, “Would you like to have my phone number? That way, should you ever need a ride, especially when it is raining outside, you can call me?”  The woman graciously accepted.
However, each time throughout the school year, when I sporadically offered to provide her and her young son a ride, she simply said, “No thanks.” Imagine my surprise and bewilderment, when a year later, my phone finally rang.
We had experienced some rainy weather the week prior to her call. Yet, on this particular day, it was bright and sunny. It sure seemed odd to me that the woman would pick such a beautiful day to ask for a ride to school. She said, "Can you please give my son a ride to school today? And if it is possible, I would like to go too." I replied, "Yes, of course.” I invited her to my home.
The school was located only a mile and a half from where we both lived. Even so, before we arrived to that busy school parking lot, we were deeply engrossed in conversation. She began, "I read your book." Wow! I turned pale with surprise and found myself speechless.  I listened as she told me how she had felt judged by me and some of the other parents over the past year. She talked about how she thought her son was being labeled as a “behavioral problem child.” Then, she said, "I feel alone. Everyone seems to dislike my son and I don't have anyone on my side."
My heart sunk. How could she have perceived me as judgmental? I thought I had left that personality trait long behind. I began to share with her stories about my past. Next, we walked our children to the playground. The woman openly and honestly explained how the school wanted to meet with her to discuss her child's behavior. She added, "I have no one to advocate for me during district meetings."  Immediately, I thought, "I am not a Social Worker any more.” Then I began to ponder how many times, I had sat on the other side of the table from a broken-hearted and scared parent at those past district meetings. How many lost opportunities to bring someone to Christ? Subsequently, I blurted out, "You are not alone! I can come with you to the school district meetings and advocate for your son." A look of relief covered her face. And the woman became silent. Then, I said, "And…I can be your friend!"
I started to talk about God. I said, “You know, your son’s name has been on my personal prayer board for over one year. My youngest son and I have been praying for your son to have friends this year.” Her eyes welled with tears of disbelief.
We waited together for the first bell to ring. Then, the woman followed me to my car and I drove her home. Yet, before shutting the car door behind her, she paused for a moment and said, "Our family has been looking for a church to attend."  I smiled a grin ear to ear and invited her to attend our church with us.  Afterwards, I slowly drove away while speaking to the Lord. “Thank you Jesus Christ for lending me Your eyes to see the hurting and for the ability to respond with grace and Love.”

Thank you for reading my about my journey with the Lord!

How to Repent and surrender your life to God.

Matthew 3:2
"...and saying, 'Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand!'(NKJV)"

Today, when I see a person suffering from emotional pain and hear his or her heartbreaking story, I am reminded of my own journey and the sadness I felt for sinning against God. It wasn't until all hope was gone in my life, that I finally learned how to REPENT! Until then, "repent" was just a word some "other Christians" used. I had no idea how to change my mind, heart or attitude. One night, in desperation, I cried out for Jesus and told Him, "I need You! Show me how to return to You!" Jesus responded and walked me through the process of repentance.
  • First, I began by daily admitting my faults and shortcomings to God. I went all in. For hours on end, I vocally confessed my sins to God. As a result, my heart began to change. Immediately, I regained sensitivity to others again and felt an instant sorrow and regret when I acted ugly.
  • Next, even in the privacy of my own home, I was careful not to create any more skeletons. When I did act wicked, I took it straight to God and would quickly apologize to His Son, Jesus Christ. In return, the healing feeling of forgiveness took root.
  • Then, I made the conscious decision to accept the gift of Jesus' sacrifice and left my past failures behind!  I committed to no longer dragging my wounds, sinful behavior and regrets with me through the rest of my life. With tears of joy, I accepted His offer of a fresh start.
  • To keep my life on track, I threw myself into His Word.
  • Finally, I refused to purposefully and ignorantly keep sinning!
I finally comprehend the word "Repent," and why this action is so important. Having decided to leave the sin I loved before, grieved over my past, apologized to God and committed myself to sinning no longer, I now experience peace instead of regret, joy instead of sorrow and hope instead of despair! Praise God!

If I can repent, anyone can!

Unknown Facts about "Apologies From a Repentant Christian"

Many Christians easily form opinions about the behavior of others. Still, how many believers are willing to admit their embarrassing faults and failures to the world, simply to Glorify God?

In my personal testimony, Apologies From a Repentant Christian, I hold nothing back. You will read how I judged, lied, gossiped and hurt others with my words and how God changed all that!~

Some unknown facts about the book are:
Original Book Cover
  • The Cover Photo was taken by a 16 year-old German Foreign Exchange Student. She attended our church for only a few weeks. The cover photo was supposed to be from a Lutheran Church, but the cross was stolen and burned in front of an African American woman's home. We traveled 50 miles to take the photo at a Church of the Nazarene. The original photo featured me on my knees. But, the majority of friends and family said, "Use one without."
  • The same week my pastor prompted me to write our story,  my next door neighbor revealed that she was an English major and offered to edit the book. Within weeks, I received a unsolicited email from a publishing company.
  • The book was fully paid for by a refund check from taxes. It was my first refund in 6 years!

    Jesus Bring the Rain!

    The Young's  Family Photo 2002
Our 8th wedding anniversary will fall on November 15, four days after the official book launch on Veteran's Day 2011 for Apologies From a Repentant Christian. I can hardly absorb all of the work God has done in our family since the night of October 20, 2008. Just three short years ago, I met with an attorney with the intentions of filing for divorce. Since then, each member of our family has individually accepted Jesus Christ into their hearts. Through Him, we have become a loving family!

Every time I tell our story to another family experiencing crisis, loss, anger and pain, I stand in awe at their hope-filled response! Our story has even make its way into the hands of the White House recently. It makes me want to say, "Jesus bring the rain!"

    MercyMe-Bring the Rain Lyrics
I can count a million times
    People asking me how I
Can praise You with all that I've gone through
    The question just amazes me
    Can circumstances possibly
Change who I forever am in You
Maybe since my life was changed
    Long before these rainy days
It's never really ever crossed my mind
To turn my back on you, oh Lord
My only shelter from the storm
But instead I draw closer through these times
    So I pray

Bring me joy, bring me peace
Bring the chance to be free
Bring me anything that brings You glory
And I know there'll be days
When this life brings me pain
But if that's what it takes to praise You
    Jesus, bring the rain

    I am Yours regardless of
The dark clouds that may loom above
Because You are much greater than my pain
You who made a way for me
    By suffering Your destiny
So tell me what's a little rain
    So I pray

    Holy, holy, holy
    Is the Lord God Almighty

Praying for our Soldiers and their families

    Remember their Sacrifice
As the 10th Anniversary of September 11th  approaches, I am asking God to comfort those who lost loved ones. I am especially praying for our Soldiers and their families. This I pray, "Recognizing that we are all dust and frail in nature, I beg you Lord, please refrain from blessing me in the coming days. I lack nothing while some of my brothers and sisters suffer in physical and emotional pain. They need Your love and compassion today. You are always faithful in answering my prayers, so I know you will hear me now. Thank You Lord!" In Your Holy Name, Amen."

Apologies From a Repentant Christian Official Book Launch

On Veteran’s Day, November 11, 2011, the official book launch of Apologies From a Repentant Christian, will be underway.

Author Donna L. Young and her retired military husband are attempting to give back to their community while assisting other military families in crisis. 50% of the sales from the launch day will be donated to organizations that provide direct relief to our military soldiers. 25% will go directly to the local, Paso Robles based military relief program, Supplies for Soldiers. The other 25% of sales will be donated to Soldiers Bible Ministry to place a bible in the hands of our soldiers.

Young’s book was released in March 2011 in paperback from Xulon Press, a division of Salem Communications. The story centers on a Christian military wife who fully surrenders her life to Jesus Christ the night her marriage results in violence. Young says, “I was sitting in the local jail holding cell, charged with a felony, when I thought, ‘How did I get here?’” With help from church members and others in their local community, the Young’s found incredible hope through the crisis and remain married.

Now, LeeRoy Young works full-time to support their family while Donna Young volunteers full-time sharing the Gospel with others. Together, they assist military organizations and directly reach out to soldiers and their families.  “In sharing our story with others, we discovered just how many military families are experiencing crisis too. I find myself spending many hours on the phone listening to stories of tragedy and loss. Then, I share the hope we found in Jesus Christ!”

The book is available for purchase on Amazon and Barnes & Noble. "I am still amazed that God is using our story to reach the hearts of others!"

    What is Heaven like?

Yesterday morning I awoke to an inspiring dream. It was one of those dreams you desperately try to fall back asleep to. In my dream, my cousin who died in a car accident when I was 18, entered the room I was in. Even though I was dreaming, I was aware that my cousin had passed away. When he approached me, I immediately requested, "Jimmy, please tell me about heaven."

My cousin looked right at me and said, "It's beautiful, the ground is made up of crystals and there's a mist in the air." Before, he could go on, I interrupted and requested, "Jimmy, tell me about Jesus!"

My cousin looked me and then slowly shook his head back and forth. He smiled and said, "He really likes you!"  I woke up with streams of tears running down my face.
