How to live a life of Obedience to God

Psalm 25:7 “Do not remember the sins of my youth, nor my transgressions;
According to Your mercy remember me, For Your goodness' sake, O Lord” (NKJV).

Recently,  my seven-year-old son began to learn about the importance of living an obedient life. At first, God spoke to his heart when he sat down to privately read his bible. Later, God spoke this same message during his Sunday school class. After awhile, my son realized that God was reaching out to him in every area of his life.  One day, God even communicated His will to my son through a single silver coin http://dlouyoung.blogspot.com/2012/04/ten-commandments-honor-your-parents.html.
One day, I began to reflect on how God was conveying the message of obedience to my son. As God would have it, I was able to vividly remember a time from my own childhood when God spoke to my heart regarding need for obedience. I chucked when I recalled that God had used a silver coin in my life too!

He was a long haired, black cat and the one my grandparents warned me not to play with. Still, out of all the cats they owned, for some reason, I was attracted to this one. His name was Pier.
We visited my grandparent’s home almost every weekend.  Usually upon arrival, I would be the first to run into their house. I would try to say, “Hello” as fast as I could, before dashing back outside to play with their cats.  Before the kitchen screen door would slam shut, my grandmother would cry out, “Nanna Pie, remember to leave Pier alone!”
On one occasion, while playing among the cats, the forbidden Pier sauntered up and began to slither against my shins. I wondered, “Is he purposely trying to tempt me?” I was old enough to know right from wrong and new to obey my grandmother’s warning. But when temptation started to creep in, I found myself reaching down to pick up the cat.
Amazingly, Pier allowed me to pick him up and hold him directly in front of me.  For a split second, we were face to face and looking right at each other.  Then, without warning, Pier extended his sharp claws and ran them quickly down my face. Frozen with fear, I began to scream. My mother quickly scooped me up in her arms and rushed me into my grandmother’s kitchen to investigate my wounds.
After the bleeding stopped, my mother told me to sit on the couch in the living room and not move. I was being disciplined for not obeying. I knew I was in trouble! I began to sob and remorsefully think, “I should have listened to my grandmother’s repeated advice.”
In a dimly lit room, I sat alone sorrowfully apologizing to God, when suddenly my grandfather appeared by my side. I had expected him to say something like, “I told you so,” but instead, he simply reached out his hand in front of me. Then, he unfolded his fingers to reveal a silver coin in the palm of his hand. I reached out to take the coin. I don’t remember taking the money, but I do remember the feel of my grandfather’s hand that day. It was warm and tender, like the hand of a baby.
My grandfather never said a word. He just looked at me through saddened eyes, as though he could feel my pain. In that moment, I felt less alone. And, through his small gift, I felt as though he was communicating the words, “I am still here, and I love you, even when you disobey.”
Today, when I think back to the memory of Pier the cat, I can’t help but notice how my feelings have changed and how differently I see that day. For much of my life, I was held captive by the guilt and shame caused by my decision of disobedience. I pictured that day through the lens of a dispirited heart.
Nowadays though, I can see, that even at the tender age of four, God was teaching me to resist temptation and obey my parents. He appeared to me the day Pier the cat, scratched my face. His soft touch was found in my grandfather’s gentle hands. His healing power was used to spare my face from permanent scaring. And through my grandfather’s gesture of offering one silver coin, God taught me a valuable lesson; real wealth is found in obedience.

Our young son gave away his last dollar. Then God blessed him in return!

It was right before Christmas when our youngest son started counting his money. He said, "Mommy, I finally have $25.00. I have enough for the Power Ranger Wolf Morpher right?" For months, our son had been saving his allowance to purchase this particular toy. However, what he didn't know was that his father and I had already purchased the toy as a Christmas gift. Over a week prior, I had carefully wrapped and hidden the toy under our Christmas tree.
As I watched our 7-yr-old spread out his dollar bills across the kitchen table, I couldn't help but think of God's glorious timing! Earlier in the week, I had promised our church Pastor that I would locate the homeless men and families in our town and inform them of a local food basket Christmas event. So, while our son was making plans to spend every dollar, I was planning how I would incorporate the message of giving to the poor.

Later, he and I climbed into our car and began to drive down the beaten path of our town. As I drove, I shared the story of the poor widow's offering http://www.jesuswalk.com/lessons/20_45-21_4.htm. Next, I began to teach my son what Scripture says about God blessing those who give to the poor and about his warning to those who don't. Luke 14:12-14 and Proverbs 28:27.  My son was unusually quiet, and I wondered if he was even listening. So, I asked, "Son, how do I treat the poor?" I choked up and began to cry, when he replied, "You give all your money away." Not only was he listening, but he had been watching me all along!  I looked up towards Heaven and under my breath, I thanked the Lord.  I said that's right Son, "We do it because the Good Lord would want us to! And, there's joy in helping the poor say 'I am rich because of what the Lord has done for me!' "

Then, at that very moment, our car approached a homeless man we know well. My son screamed, "Stop Mom!" So, I abruptly pulled the car to the shoulder of the road. My son ran up to the man we call "Woody,"  pulled out a ten dollar bill and two one dollar bills from his wallet. He handed the money to the homeless man. Woody lost his composure. And, it took both of us a moment to wipe the tears flowing from our eyes.

Just then, another homeless man approached where we stood. My eyes lit up when I  noticed that the man was wearing the old Navy Seabee T-Shirt I had given him a month or two ago. The man and I greeted each other with a hug as my son waited patiently below. When, as we pulled away from each other, the man and I noticed that my son was holding another $12.00. He generously handed the money to the second homeless man. All of us praised God for my young son's heart. Then, after telling the men about the soup kitchen, my son and I slowly drove away. He said, "Mommy, I only have one dollar left." I asked him, "But how do you feel?" My son replied, "Really Good!"

Next, we drove to the local McDonald's parking lot. I was hoping to find yet another homeless man I know. However, when I pulled into the parking lot, the man was no where to be found. Instead, I saw a parked car with an open trunk and two people sitting on the curb. I approached the couple and asked, "Are you guys hungry?" The woman replied, "You are not going to believe this, but I was just thinking, 'I wonder if there is a place like the Salvation Army around here? We are from out of state. We lost our jobs and we're hungry.' " Amazing!

I began to share my personal testimony with couple. I told her, "I too went through a trial not so long ago. But I surrendered the situation to God and He brought me out of it."  Later, as I provided directions to the soup kitchen, my son exited the car. He approached the woman and softly said, "Here you go," as he handed her his last dollar bill. The woman looked at my son with tears in her eyes, as we hugged the couple and slowly walked away.

The day before Christmas Eve, my young son receive a Christmas card. Excited, he tore open the envelop. Inside was a Christmas card with a check for $20.00. My son looked at me and smiled. I said, "I wonder if God will give you the exact amount back." Then, on Christmas Eve, our family drove to my parents' home to share in the holiday festivities. Under their Christmas tree was an aluminum container with my son's name written on it. When my son opened the container holding five one dollar bills, he screamed, "Thank you Jesus!" God had returned all of his money to him.

Imagine his reaction on Christmas morning, when our son opened his Mighty Morphan Power Ranger toy. With joy overflowing, he exclaimed, "God gave me back my $25.00 and I got my Wolf Morpher! Praise God! Thank You Jesus!"

Why would I think buying Christmas presents brings Joy?

My husband & Son golfing together

As a Christmas gift to my husband this year, I wanted to buy him a round of golf. I thought, "It has been while since he has been able to spend time with our now 23-year-old son. Maybe they can resume that old tradition of playing golf together on Christmas morning."

However, a round of Golf is expensive, especially where we live. In fact, I figured I would have to spend around $100.00 on this gift. I wondered, "How am I going to generate this amount of money when I haven't worked since March 2011?" http://dlouyoung.blogspot.com/p/unemployed-mother-turns-down-needed-to.html. I decided to sell some of my belongings to afford the gift. So, I listed items I knew would sell on Ebay.

Perhaps, I became too focused on buying Christmas presents this year. Because, this morning I found myself setting my closed bible aside to curiously inquire about my Ebay Seller account. I noticed right away the bids for the items I was selling had increased. This meant that I would be receiving more money. I would have thought this would make me feel happy. Yet, for reasons unknown to me at that moment, I was feeling a little let down.

As a result, I grabbed my bible and walked away from the computer desk. As usual, I allowed the pages to fall open and land as they may. As God would have it, they settled on 2 Kings Chapter 5. Right away, I wondered, "What does leprosy have to do with my day?" Still, I kept reading. It took me a little while to digest the story. I had to pause frequently. Then when my eyes finally caught verse 26 I knew what God was communicating to my heart!
2 Kings Chapter 5:26
"Then he said to him, "Did not my heart go with you when the man turned back from his chariot to meet you? Is it time to receive money and to receive clothing, olive groves and vineyards, sheep and oxen, male and female servants?" (NKJV)

My eyes welled with tears as I quietly whispered to my Lord, "It is time when You say it is time!" Then, the most loving and caring voice spoke to my heart, saying, "Don't you have everything you need?" I simply and humbly replied, "Yes Lord." Then, He said, "Then what is it you need money for?" I thought about how Christmas wasn't about buying presents for others. So, wiping the tears from my eyes, I replied, "Nothing Lord."
The Word of God-A love Story

After that, something happened that had never happened to me before! I heard the Lord say, "I love you, my sweet daughter." Sobbing, I replied, "I love you too Lord!"

Money? I almost let being broke get me down.

Today, for some odd reason, I began to ponder how low my bank account was! It was months ago that I turned down unemployment benefits to show forgiveness to my past employer. http://dlouyoung.blogspot.com/p/unemployed-mother-turns-down-needed-to.htmlhttp://dlouyoung.blogspot.com/p/unemployed-mother-turns-down-needed-to.html Yet, until today, I hadn't felt so broke. However, it didn't take long before the Lord corrected my wandering thoughts.

First, as God would have it, I drove passed a homeless family of four. Seeing the children sitting on the sidewalk next to their father who was holding a sign that said, "Need Help," reminded me of the scripture I had read earlier. I was to have humble faith. So, I promised myself that if this family was still in front of McDonald's when I return to our town, I would stop and offer them a bible and prayer.

Next, I went to pick up my computer. The young man who fixed the computer, loaded several extras, even a DVD burner, just because. And, he only charged me $20.00. Wow!

Then, on the way home, I saw the same family. So, I stopped and offered them the bibles. We started talking for awhile. I discovered that the youngest was celebrating his birthday tomorrow. He was born on Sept 11. When I asked his name, he said, "It's Phil, but I go by Joseph." I told him the story of Mary, Jesus and Joseph.

After, I learned that his older brother's birthday was the following day. I wanted desperately to offer the parents a few dollars to buy birthday presents. But, I had no money to offer. I felt comfortable sharing my story of hope, so I leaned in and started to recall the events that led me to surrender to God. While I spoke with the mother directly, I noticed that her two children had invited my son to play with their Lego's. Her two boys even offered son a present. A heaviness began to spread across my chest. I could barely stand the pressure. If only, I had a few dollars to offer them.

Later, my husband returned home. He was home for the weekend. When he walked through the door, we exchanged a warm greeting. Then he extended his hand. He said, "Pick one." In his hand were two lottery tickets. I smiled and said, "Oh honey, I don't gamble any more." But he insisted, "Please, I bought this one for you!" I watched as he scratched his ticket. Nothing! ,

Next, it was my turn. I began to scratch my "winning numbers,"  the numbers you need to match "your numbers" to. When I was finished, I scratched my first number. WINNER! I looked across the counter where my husband stood. We met eyes, and we both smiled. I scratched the next number, WINNER! And, the next, WINNER! The entire card was filled with winning numbers. I won $18.00, enough to buy a cake, frosting, a card and still have a few dollars for a gift. I said, "Our God is AMAZING! I can't wait to offer a cake and gift to these boys on their birthday." We immediately raced off to the local grocery store and bought the ingredients. I had completely forgotten about my money problems!

Outcome of Unemployment Hearing

The day of the unemployment appeal hearing was fast approaching. It was scheduled for August 4, 2011. I had previously decided not to appear so that I could show my past employer compassion, forgiveness and love. In spite of everything, we were all supposed to be believers in our Lord Jesus Christ. Even though our family could have used the extra $1,600.00 a month, the decision to deny the benefits and trust the Lord was the right one.

Still, unpaid bills were piling up on my writing station. My husband had begun to pay the household bills, but his income was not enough to cover those extra expenses such as dental visits and car registrations that were now due. When neighbors began telling me how worn my car tires looked, I knew we could not afford new tires. So, I stopped driving except locally or when absolutely necessary. My husband started complaining of tooth pain from cavities and my six-year-old was starting the first grade. Our young son desperately in need new school clothes. He had chewed the cuffs of many of his shirts and stained the rest. He had outgrown his slacks and jeans. Where would the money come from?

At the same time, I watched the stack of unpaid expenses grow; friends and family began to tempt me by saying, "Just go to court. The state has already found in your favor. God wants you to have this money!"
I didn’t want to think for just one second, how I could have used the extra income. So, on the morning of the appeal hearing, as I made my morning coffee, I prayed. "Lord, please distract me today, and focus me on Your will."

God immediately responded! Within minutes of my prayer, the phone rang. On the other end of the line was the Co-Founder and Volunteer Executive Director for Soldiers Bible Ministry http://soldiersbibleministry.org. He was returning my call in order to discuss collaboration in spreading the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The reason, I quit my job! I smiled and praised God for the divine distraction.

Then the next day, my made his usual commute home from work to be with his family for the weekend. When I began to explain how God was using me to spread the gospel through Soldiers Bible Ministry, my husband listened intently. With a smile, he said, "So honey, guess what? They gave me a raise at work this week."  I asked him, "Did you request more money?" And he said, "No, my supervisor put in for the raise some time ago. The request was granted yesterday. I'll be getting an extra few dollars and hour." My eyes welled with tears. The day of the hearing, God had given my husband a raise that would allow me to remain solid in my attempt to spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ!
