Angels here on Earth

GOD WAS IN AN UNFORESEEN FRIEND

Psalm 127:3-4 “Children are a heritage from the LORD, offspring a reward from him.  Like arrows in the hands of a warrior are children born in one’s youth.” (NKJV)

A year after my father’s fall and news of my parents divorce, I entered the second grade. I was academically advanced, so I was placed in a combination second-third grade class. The third graders sat in the front of the class, taking up the first few rows while the second graders sat in the back. I immediately developed a crush on one particular third grade boy. He sat in the first row of the classroom, middle seat.
The children in our classroom had developed the habit of playing through recess without using the restroom. Then, we would all take turns, getting out of doing our work by going to the restroom during class. Within a few weeks, my teacher instituted a new rule, use the restroom at recess only!
One of my teacher’s favorite learning activities was to have each child stand before the class and read a paragraph from a book. I was a good reader, a faster reader but I was also a shy child and my home life was very difficult around this time. Most of the time, I felt broken and afraid. My mother had just filed for divorce from my biological father and I had witnessed his horrible accident the year prior. As a result, I felt out of place and friendless.
On the day it was my turn to read in front of the class, I played through recess. When I returned to class that day, I approached my teacher and asked for the hall pass. She politely reminded me that I was supposed to use the restroom during my break. Then she instructed me to head to the front of the room and begin to read. It was my turn!
I walked, nervously to the front of the room and stood approximately three feet facing the boy I had set my heart on.  I began to read.
I felt my face and chest beginning to get hot with heat rash, as they always did when I was nervous. Then I began to hear laughing and looked up to see the children pointing their fingers at me with smiles on their faces. I looked down to see a puddle below me. My white striped seventies hipster pants were now yellow and my socks were all wet. My teacher came to the front of the room and put her arm around my shoulder. She walked me outside and told me I could wait for my mother on the playground jungle gym structure.
Outside, I felt safe, embarrassed, but safe. I sat on the jungle gym and patiently waited for my mother to bring a change of clothes. I don’t remember my mother arriving, the clothes I changed into or if I even left school for the rest of the day, but I do remember the next two weeks of school and how God was there in my teacher and classmates.
I would have figured the teasing would have continued, but it didn’t. My teacher was especially compassionate as though guilt overwhelmed her. Even the boy I liked seemed to smile at me more often. I couldn’t imagine why they were being so nice to me. Then, the Lord sent me an angel.
It was about two weeks after I had my accident in class that a new student entered our classroom. She was tall, at least a head above all of the boys and she had snow white hair. Even her eyebrows were white. I hadn’t seen white hair on a child before only blond, so I was captivated by her glow. On her first day, the new second grade girl wore a white dress, knee length with a frilly lace bottom. Her socks were folded over to reveal a frilly lace rim that matched her dress. Her shoes were also white, polished and shiny enough to reflect the light. I felt like I couldn’t take my eyes off of her. The teacher had positioned her directly in front of me in line and in the next row over in the class. She stood out so much that I remember her playing alone during the first recess.
I am sure why the teacher called the new child at the front of the class to read, before all of the students, on her very first day. The child’s face was red like mine was. She began to read and within seconds, had an accident.  My heart filled with mercy and compassion because while everyone else could only see what had happened, I could feel her pain inside. Then something amazing happened, my embarrassment from my own accident quickly disappeared.   The teacher asked me to wait with the girl as her parents arrived with a change of clothes.
During the time we spent alone, I discovered we had much in common. We became best friends that year. We playing during every recess together and we reminded each other to use the restroom during recess.
My new best-friend didn’t attend our school the following year. I wasn’t told what had happened and I would never see or speak to her again. Still, throughout my life, I would remember her friendship fondly.
Still, until God opened my eyes, I didn’t know the true purpose of that relationship. These days, I see second grade a little differently. I know now, God was by my side during a season of my life that offered many trials. He didn’t allow me to bare that embarrassment alone. Miraculously, a classroom of seven and eight-year-olds

Devoting my birthday to bringing others Close to God.

Matthew 25:23 "His Lord said to him, 'Well done, good and faithful servant; you have been faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord.' (NKJV)

The day was my 41st birthday. It was early in the morning when the phone began to ring. "Happy Birthday to you, happy birthday to you," my husband sang in his sweetest voice. Then, my loving parents called. "We wanted to wish you a happy birthday on your special day." What joy! Still, something felt different inside.
For over three years, I had focused my attention each day on serving God. And in return, God made everyday special. Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day and even regular ordinary days were special when I focused on serving the Lord. So, I decided that this day would not be different.
On the way home from dropping my son off at school, I felt an urge to drive to the local coffee house. I decided to use the drive thru option. There was a long line of cars waiting to purchase coffee that day. Still, I was enjoying the song that played on the radio and content with waiting as I sang my praises to God.
I waited patiently for my turn to order. Suddenly, out of the blue, God spoke to my heart. "Pay for the person's order in the car behind you," God instructed. I only had enough cash to buy one cup of coffee. So, I scrambled to find a credit card that would afford both my order and his. When, I pulled up to the drive thru window, I explained to the clerk what I intended to do. The cashier seemed taken aback. In her silence, I handed her a little note and asked her to give the paper to the gentleman along with his cup of coffee. The cashier began to read the note to herself. "God placed it on my heart to buy your coffee today. Merry Christmas!" The teenager’s eyes became misty as she agreed to my request. She warmly thanked me for being so kindhearted. As I drove away, other vehicles filled in the gaps between our cars. Thus, I was left to wonder the man's reaction to God’s gesture. Still, I felt warmness in my heart. So, I prayerfully thanked God for counting me worthy to serve Him once again.
A few blocks away, I took a sip of that expensive cup of coffee. I smiled and giggled when I realized I had spent $5.25 on a cup of coffee I could have made at home for less than a dollar. I had gone to that coffee house simply to share God’s love and bring that chosen man and cashier closer to God and that was the best birthday gift I could have received!

God Orchestrated Our Thanksgiving Day Celebration!

Thanksgiving Day 2011, I decided not to host a traditional Thanksgiving Day dinner in our home. Instead, our family surrendered the week's vacation and Thanksgiving Day to the Lord. In return, God orchestrated the picture perfect occasion to share His birth in a practical way with my newly saved husband and youngest son.

We had arrived at the KOA with no expectations. However, by day two we had participated in many of the activities offered by the campground. So, my husband offered our son and me a chance to ride in a doonbuggie over the sandy hills nearby. I couldn't wait to take the off road vehicle for a drive. As we drove over the cliffs, hills and valleys, the concept that Jesus was born in a cave lingered in my mind. God must have known my thoughts because we unknowingly followed Him straight to same natural cavities and rock shelters built by His own hand.

Caves on California Mexico Boarder
The drive out to the caves was bumpy, cold and gritty. Yet, it was worth every minute. Scripture immediately came to life as I shared with my wide eyed husband and child how Jesus was more likely born in a cave rather than a manger. To my surprise, and without any hesitation, both my husband and son quickly responded to my words by climbing inside one of the caves and exploring.

Because I am a new believer, I don't pretend to know scripture enough to preach it. Yet, when God reveals yet another truth, I am filled with excitement and can't wait to share my new discovery with others. I can't wait to see what He will reveal next!

May the Good Lord bless you this Thanksgiving Day by filling your heart with His peace and joy!

God used the movie, "The Nativity Story" to touch my heart!

In December 2008, two months after I had surrendered my life to Christ, I was just beginning to comprehend what it meant to be a Christian. Even after having called myself a Christian for 38 years, I knew nothing about my Lord and Savior. But God was patient with me. He even used my love of watching movies to teach me His story.

When I first moved into the apartment, I could only afford Internet, not cable television. I was curious about the man called Jesus Christ. So, I streamed movies through the Internet. Because it was Christmas time, I decided to watch the movie “The Nativity Story.”  The movie wasn't new to me. In fact, for my birthday a few years prior, I had seen the movie with my husband in the theater. Still, I had never watched the birth of Christ with open eyes. Now, as I watched the rich history of Herod the Great being portrayed against the backdrop of the meek village of Nazareth, I was left to ponder what Mary, the mother of God, must have endured in carrying her baby-the Son of God!

I wrapped myself in a blanket and got cozy on the couch while the movie streamed from my laptop, that sat on the footrest at eye level in front of me. Almost immediately, tears started to roll down the side of my face and dripped into my right ear, as I felt deep appreciation for Mary and Joseph. How much faith had it taken for them to travel so far and in such a humble condition? I was moved by the sacrifice that Mary had to make at such a tender, young age by being pregnant with the Lord. Yet, she never grumbled or complained. Nor did she concern herself with what others’ thought. Instead, she simply obeyed the Lord, her God.  I watched history unfold in front of my eyes, and I thought, Joseph too, the earthly father of Christ, would have changed the course of history had he not obeyed the Lord in remaining married to Mary.
It has been three years since I first cried out for Christ to save me from my distress. Now, when I watch the "The Nativity Story," I think about how much my faith has grown. Perhaps the most valuable lesson I have learned is that if I am faithful to God, there is nowhere I can go that would separate me from the bond of His love. So each time I experience another trial, like Mary and Joseph, I obey, knowing that I will prevail by God's mercy if I simply cling to Him.  I want to thank You Lord for all You have done for me and my family and wish You a Happy Birthday. Welcome to our hearts!

Luke 2: 3-16 "So all went to be registered, everyone to his own city. Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David, to be registered with Mary, his betrothed wife, who was with child. So it was, that while they were there, the days were completed for her to be delivered. And she brought forth her firstborn Son, and wrapped Him in swaddling cloths, and laid Him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn. Now there were in the same country shepherds living out in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night. And behold, an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were greatly afraid. Then the angel said to them, "Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be to all people. "For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. "And this [will be] the sign to you: You will find a Babe wrapped in swaddling cloths, lying in a manger." And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying: "Glory to God in the highest, And on earth peace, goodwill toward men!" So it was, when the angels had gone away from them into heaven, that the shepherds said to one another, 'Let us now go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has come to pass, which the Lord has made known to us.' And they came with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the Babe lying in a manger." (NKJV)

Christmas Tree Blessing!

Recently, I tweeted a link to my most favorite Christmas Tree story. When unexpectedly today, we experienced an even better Christmas Tree miracle.

I knew my bank account was running low, but I was expecting a birthday check in the mail. So, I told my youngest son that I could afford a Christmas Tree if I spent no more than $30.00. He agreed and we both started to feel excited about choosing the perfect little evergreen.

The Christmas tree farm we purchased our tree at last year only sold Douglas firs. I had seen a picture of a white fir and thought, "If I could find a small white fir for the right price, I would be able to decorate with fewer ornaments and subsequently would have less needles clean up." As a result, I decided to go to the larger, more popular Christmas tree farm. I figured, "I'll drive down the driveway, look at the price chart and turn around if I can't afford one of their trees." The tree farm was bustling with activity. From the car, we could see two boys swinging high in the air from what looked like tree swings. People were walking to their cars with their trees wrapped in plastic netting. And there was a long line to see Santa Claus who sitting inside an over sized sleigh.

Before we could even walk through the gate, my young and faithful son grabbed my hand and said, "Mom, can we pray?" I bowed my head and he began to pray, "Lord, we just bless You for this day. Thank you for this day. Please help us to find a cheap Christmas tree. Help us to find the one You want for us. We just bless You Lord. I love you Lord. In Your precious name, Amen." I immediately got down on one knee and hugged my son tightly. I said, "That's the way to pray Son. You always pray for God's will. I am so proud of you."

Just past the gate, we found ourselves staring at Santa. My son, said, "Look mom!" I asked, "Do you want to go see Santa?" He shook his head and said, "Yes, please." We walked right up to the sleigh and suddenly we were the only ones in line. Santa handed me a bite size candy cane as he invited my son to join him in the sleigh. My son hesitated and looked up to me for confirmation. I said, "Go ahead." Then he climbed in and sat upon Santa's lap. Santa asked what he wanted for Christmas and my son replied, "Power Rangers..." After that, he climbed back down and stood by my side. There was an awkward pause as though Santa was waiting for me to say something to him. I said, "Actually Santa, we believe in Jesus Christ." How was I to know his answer would affect me so intensely. The man in the Santa suit then looked me directly in the eye and said, "Me too! He saved me recently. I was in a coma and no one knew what was going to happen. But He let me live. So, I believe too!" I choked back the tears. Had Santa Claus really just shared his testimony with me? As we slowly walked away, I explained to my son that Santa was a believer too. He began to jump up and down and skip by my side.

We only walked among the trees for a few minutes before we came upon one tree that was the type I had set my heart on. Afraid of feeling disappointment, I couldn't bring myself to reach out and turn the price tag. So, my son did it for me. Suddenly and with great excitement, he screamed, "$29.95!" Unbelievable!

I decided to chop the fir down myself. I had seen this done many times. "How hard can it be," I thought. So, I went back to the tree entrance and grabbed a hand saw. But after only about twenty minutes I was tired. I had attempted to cut through the whole tree. And when that didn't work, about halfway through, I went to the opposite side of the tree and made another cut. It was only when the second side was halfway through, that I noticed I had created two cuts at different levels. I sat back on my heels and wiped my brow. When out of nowhere I heard, "Do you want some help?" I said, "Yes please!" A young Christmas tree lot employee had come to my rescue. He was armed with a chainsaw. When he was done cutting the tree down, I asked him his name. He replied, "It's Michael." I smiled, and said, "Do you know your name means a gift from God?' "

Michael loaded the tree on the back of a tractor and asked us if we wanted a ride. My son looked up at me and said, "This is the best day ever!" I politely replied, "Yes, that would be great," and we hopped on the rear of the tractor.

Our Christmas Tree
As we unloaded the tree and walked up to the checkout area, I noticed that the pleasant young woman handling the payment transactions was wearing a beautiful cross around her neck. The cross was bigger than any charm I had ever seen. The pink and gold stones were shining bright. I said, you must be a believer too. She replied, "I am. Most of us here are."

Then, my son grabbed the front end of the tree as I held on to the stump. As we walked to our car, I noticed an elderly man parking his truck nearby. He held his hand out of the window and gave us the "thumbs up signal as if to say, 'Good job my faithful one.' " I couldn't wipe the smile from my face. Under my breath I said, "Thank you Lord. Thank you!"

We pulled up to our apartment and brought the tree inside. Instantly,  I received several more blessings. First, I heard the cooing of two doves that were sitting on the telephone poll in front of our apartment. I smiled and thanked God.  Next, our neighborhood ice cream man stopped at our street's stop sign while his ice cream truck started to play the song, "Oh come all ye faithful."  I praised God again. Then my father called to tell me that he found an old Christmas tree ornament that I had given him years ago. He said, "It made me think of you and I wanted to call you and tell you that I love you." After that, my husband called. He had received a care package that I had sent to him over a week ago. I listened to my husband express his love and gratitude to me for over 15 minutes. Finally, my youngest son and I decorated the tree together. When we were finished, he asked to create his own ornament for the tree. When he brought his precious handmade gift to me, I was blown away. The heart shaped adornment simply read, "Jesus Loves You!"

Can a True Believer Sing Secular Songs and still Worship God from a pure and worshipful heart?

I  faced a six hour drive on my return home from spending the Thanksgiving Day holiday with my husband. So, first I made sure our seven-year-old son was comfortable in the back seat. I was hoping he would recline and possibly take a nap. Next, I stacked my favorite compact discs (Cd's) by my side. If I sang along to each 2-hour CD the drive might seem to go by faster.

The first CD I put in immediately lulled my son to sleep. However, the slow melody was incidentally calming me too.  So, I switched the CD for the next one in the stack. Christmas favorites. All slow songs again! I had chosen all slow songs for the drive. What was I going to do now?

I turned the radio on. Maybe I could find a contemporary Christian radio station. As the digital scanner ran through each station, I noticed a pattern. All of the stations that came in clear were in Spanish. Then finally, one English station tuned onto my radio. The DJ said, "Oldies..." A song from my childhood began to play. I hadn't listened to anything but Christian radio for the past three years. So, I wondered how I would feel while listening to a disco song from the 80's.

The song, "Never knew love like this before," by Stephanie Mills had me immediately sitting up straight and bouncing to the beat. Soon, I found myself singing along. And as I sang, I thought about my relationship with Christ. I began to picture singing the song to the Lord as though He was sitting to my right in the passenger seat. By the time the second verse began to play, my eyes welled with tears and I was struggling to keep my eyes open, but for very different reason.

Never Knew Love Like This Before-
Stephanie Mills
I never knew love like this before

Now I'm lonely never more
Since you came into my life
You are my lovelight, this I know
And I'll never let you go
Your my all, you're part of me

Once I was lost and now I'm found
Then you turned my world around
When I need you, I call your name

I had hoped to change the station and return to listening to my Christian favorites after the song ended. However, when the next song started to play, I found myself once again singing along. The song was released when I was a young girl at a time when I spent many hours in a roller rink skating with friends. Back then, I attended church regularly. Yet, I had no faith.  I would have thought these two disco songs would spark memories from my childhood. Instead, I was lost in a moment of worshipping the Lord our God.

Forgetting how foolish I might look to other drivers on the road, at one point, I raised my left hand in the air as I worshiped the Lord. All the while, I sang, "Ain't no Stopping us Now, we're on the move!" This time I imaged myself singing as part of a choir made up of newly saved Christians as I sang,

Ain't no stoppin' us now, We're on the move Ain't no stoppin' us now, We've got the groove Ain't no stoppin' us now,We're on the move Ain't no stoppin' us now, We've got the groove
I know you know someone who's got a negative vibe And if you're trying to make it they only push you aside They really don't have nowhere to go Ask 'em where they're going, they don't know But we won't let nothing hold us back We gonna put ourselves together. We're gonna polish up our act. And if you've ever been held down before, I know that you refuse to be held down any more.
Don't you let nothing nothing, stand in your way
I want you to listen, listen To every word I say, every word I say

I listened to a few more songs, all the while imagining my Savior by my side. Time flew by. And as I pulled up to our home, I was still enjoying the intimacy of God's presence.
