Thank You God for Answering my Prayers this Christmas!

Exodus 20:12 (NKJV) “Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long upon the land which the Lord your God is giving you."

For over one year my mother's name remained on my prayer board while I prayed, "Please Lord, won't you provide my mother with an opportunity to boldly profess her faith in You?"
I started praying this particular prayer one morning after my mother had called. During that conversation, my mother shared a concern over losing her license to practice as a therapist. She said, "I want to talk about Jesus Christ with my clients but I am restricted by my license." I knew first hand the worry my mother felt. I too had felt God’s tug on my heart to share His message of hope with those who were hurting and in deep emotional pain. And like my mother, in the past, I faced worldly consequences for proselytizing. As a result, I knew just how to pray for her!
In each subsequent conversation, I graciously reminded my mother that God would protect her and watch over her as she spread the Word of Christ. Surprisingly one day, at the end of a phone call, my mother hesitantly asked me to add one of her client’s initials to my prayer board. She was careful to protect the hurting woman’s identity. Still, I assured my mother that God would know who the woman was, even if I only prayed using her initials.
Immediately, after saying our goodbyes, I went to my prayer board and wrote the client's first initial in the center of the board. Then, I instantly began to pray. "Please Lord, comfort this hurting and depressed woman."
Next, I prayed for the remaining names on my prayer board. When I came to my mother's name, I prayed, "Please Lord, give her courage. Help her lead this hopeless woman to You even at the risk of losing her license. Father in Heaven, please help my mother boldly proclaim, 'I am a Christian therapist' so that others will know to come to her in order to find peace. In Your mighty name, Amen.”
A few weeks later, I called my mother to catch up on the ins and outs of our daily lives. She listened patiently as I spoke about all the ways God had used me to reach out to others. Then, she said, "I was thinking about you yesterday. I don't know if I can tell you this story without crying." She continued, "This past week, when I met with my client, the client I had told you about, we prayed together." Speechless, I remained quiet.  Then my mother added, "This time, when my client started to weep over her sadness, I said to her, 'I want to share the hope I found in Jesus Christ.'” Amazing!
My mother told me how her client simply listened as she spoke about the power my mother found through repentance.  Together, the two women prayed the sinner's prayer. I could hear my mother's joy resonate through the phone as she tearfully spoke about leading her client to Christ. Quietly, I praised God.
After my mother finished her story, I told her I was proud of her. In response, my mother said those beautiful and sweet words I had been praying to hear her say. She said, "Well after all, I am a Christian Therapist!"

Devoting my birthday to bringing others Close to God.

Matthew 25:23 "His Lord said to him, 'Well done, good and faithful servant; you have been faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord.' (NKJV)

The day was my 41st birthday. It was early in the morning when the phone began to ring. "Happy Birthday to you, happy birthday to you," my husband sang in his sweetest voice. Then, my loving parents called. "We wanted to wish you a happy birthday on your special day." What joy! Still, something felt different inside.
For over three years, I had focused my attention each day on serving God. And in return, God made everyday special. Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day and even regular ordinary days were special when I focused on serving the Lord. So, I decided that this day would not be different.
On the way home from dropping my son off at school, I felt an urge to drive to the local coffee house. I decided to use the drive thru option. There was a long line of cars waiting to purchase coffee that day. Still, I was enjoying the song that played on the radio and content with waiting as I sang my praises to God.
I waited patiently for my turn to order. Suddenly, out of the blue, God spoke to my heart. "Pay for the person's order in the car behind you," God instructed. I only had enough cash to buy one cup of coffee. So, I scrambled to find a credit card that would afford both my order and his. When, I pulled up to the drive thru window, I explained to the clerk what I intended to do. The cashier seemed taken aback. In her silence, I handed her a little note and asked her to give the paper to the gentleman along with his cup of coffee. The cashier began to read the note to herself. "God placed it on my heart to buy your coffee today. Merry Christmas!" The teenager’s eyes became misty as she agreed to my request. She warmly thanked me for being so kindhearted. As I drove away, other vehicles filled in the gaps between our cars. Thus, I was left to wonder the man's reaction to God’s gesture. Still, I felt warmness in my heart. So, I prayerfully thanked God for counting me worthy to serve Him once again.
A few blocks away, I took a sip of that expensive cup of coffee. I smiled and giggled when I realized I had spent $5.25 on a cup of coffee I could have made at home for less than a dollar. I had gone to that coffee house simply to share God’s love and bring that chosen man and cashier closer to God and that was the best birthday gift I could have received!

Why would I think buying Christmas presents brings Joy?

My husband & Son golfing together

As a Christmas gift to my husband this year, I wanted to buy him a round of golf. I thought, "It has been while since he has been able to spend time with our now 23-year-old son. Maybe they can resume that old tradition of playing golf together on Christmas morning."

However, a round of Golf is expensive, especially where we live. In fact, I figured I would have to spend around $100.00 on this gift. I wondered, "How am I going to generate this amount of money when I haven't worked since March 2011?" http://dlouyoung.blogspot.com/p/unemployed-mother-turns-down-needed-to.html. I decided to sell some of my belongings to afford the gift. So, I listed items I knew would sell on Ebay.

Perhaps, I became too focused on buying Christmas presents this year. Because, this morning I found myself setting my closed bible aside to curiously inquire about my Ebay Seller account. I noticed right away the bids for the items I was selling had increased. This meant that I would be receiving more money. I would have thought this would make me feel happy. Yet, for reasons unknown to me at that moment, I was feeling a little let down.

As a result, I grabbed my bible and walked away from the computer desk. As usual, I allowed the pages to fall open and land as they may. As God would have it, they settled on 2 Kings Chapter 5. Right away, I wondered, "What does leprosy have to do with my day?" Still, I kept reading. It took me a little while to digest the story. I had to pause frequently. Then when my eyes finally caught verse 26 I knew what God was communicating to my heart!
2 Kings Chapter 5:26
"Then he said to him, "Did not my heart go with you when the man turned back from his chariot to meet you? Is it time to receive money and to receive clothing, olive groves and vineyards, sheep and oxen, male and female servants?" (NKJV)

My eyes welled with tears as I quietly whispered to my Lord, "It is time when You say it is time!" Then, the most loving and caring voice spoke to my heart, saying, "Don't you have everything you need?" I simply and humbly replied, "Yes Lord." Then, He said, "Then what is it you need money for?" I thought about how Christmas wasn't about buying presents for others. So, wiping the tears from my eyes, I replied, "Nothing Lord."
The Word of God-A love Story

After that, something happened that had never happened to me before! I heard the Lord say, "I love you, my sweet daughter." Sobbing, I replied, "I love you too Lord!"

Was Ebenezer Scrooge Saved?

Before I sat down to write this blog, I put on the 1951 classic Christmas movie,  Christmas Carol with Alastair Sim as Scrooge http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scrooge_%281951_film%29. The old black and white, now restored and in beautiful color, is said to capture the true essence of the Spirit of Christmas. Telling a story of redemption, this movie opens with the Song, "Hark the Herald Angels Sing." http://www.carols.org.uk/hark_the_herald_angels_sing.htm

As I watched the opening credits fade in and out against an open book background, I listened carefully to the words of the song. And for the first time, I allowed them to penetrate my heart.

"Born that man no more may die
Born to raise the sons of earth
Born to give them second birth
Hark! The herald angels sing
"Glory to the newborn King!"

I had thought the movie would simply be comforting company. However, after only one scene, I was looking through a window at my own past behavior and considering the transformation that left me filled with unimaginable joy.

I watched the main character's interactions with others and pondered how similar my life was to the man, Ebenezer Scrooge. In the past, I too was cranky and difficult. And, I was abandoned by my father at a young age. As a result, I also closed my heart to others. Further, I used to rationalized my behavior, by comparing my actions to the actions of others. I often claimed, "I am no worse than anyone else." I even blamed others for my negative attitude.

Also similar to Scrooge, I too was chastised and warned of my ways. http://dlouyoung.blogspot.com/p/my-personal-testimony.html. Further, just as the Spirit revealed those lost opportunities for a joyous and peaceful life for Scrooge, the Holy Spirit revealed my past behavior to me. Finally, in the last moments of the movie, Scrooge experiences joy. He asks, "Oh, I don't deserve to be so happy. I can't help it! I just can't help it." I remember times when I had made the same comment.

However, there seems to be one main difference between transformation and his. I made the conscience effort to surrender my life to Jesus Christ. I repented for my past behavior. Then, I began a journey of reading God's Word everyday and spending time getting to know My Lord and Savior.

So, as the movie closed, I was left with an unsettling thought, "Even though Ebenezer Scrooge transformed his heart and began to consider the welfare of mankind, did he ever rest in peace knowing that true joy comes from the acceptance of Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior?"

5 Top Ways God Changed My Heart

Sometimes a simple conversation with a person from my past serves to bitterly remind me of how hardened my heart was. Yet, I am also able to praise God for the changes He has made in me!
Here are the Top 5 ways God changed my heart!

  5. From Judgmental to Merciful
Proverbs 11:17 The merciful man does good for his own soul, But he who is cruel troubles his own flesh (NKJV).

In the past, I was mean to others. I often judged people harshly and formed immediate opinions. I rarely showed others mercy. I held grudges. I was even told once “You are mean!” I didn’t realize then, that my abrasive behavior towards others was hurting my own soul. What changed this was the mercy and compassion God provided through others during one of my greatest trials in life. These days, rather than harshly judging others, I show everyone I meet mercy as though the Lord if He were by my side watching.

4. From the discouraging word to the healing word
Proverbs 15:4-6 A wholesome tongue is a tree of life,
But perverseness in it breaks the spirit (NKJV).

Prior to October 2008, I never understood the power of words. I didn’t understand how a gentle word could encourage the soul or how a cruel word could devastate one’s spirit. While living an unholy life, I used words to express my anger, to discourage and to control others. I have since discovered how words of the righteous can influence, support and even win souls. What changed this was the lie that was said that caused my arrest. And the subsequent call I received from Community Care Licensing, when the investigative agent stated, "I know what you did, I have the paperwork in front of me." Later, after gathering the true facts, the agent would also be humbled with her discouraging words.

3. From trouble maker to comforter
Proverbs 11:29  He who troubles his own house
will inherit the wind, and the fool will be servant to he wise of heart (NKJV).

Coming from an upbringing that was more chaotic than peaceful, it became more comfortable to stir things up and live in chaos than in peace. Therefore, I often used my temper, anxiety and bitterness to disrupt peaceful situations. I suffered the effects of my behavior both professionally and personally and as Proverbs 11:29 suggests, by doing so, my actions never allowed me to hold onto anything that mattered. Instead, I inherited only more problems. What changed this was spending time reading God's Word. Reading my bible surrounded me with a sense of serenity that I had never known before. The more I persisted, the more calm I became. I found comfort in God’s word. I especially found reassurance in scripture when I felt attacked by others.

2. From pride and shame to humility and submission to Christ
Proverbs 11:2 When pride comes, then comes
shame; But with the humble is wisdom (NKJV).

God had a plan in helping me conquer my pride. His plan began the night I called the police on October 20, 2008, to teach my husband a lesson. In my arrogance, I thought I was calling the police to win the fight. I wanted my husband to understand that “No one who lays a hand on me can get away with it.” That night, I learned God was in charge. Later, I began to see my arrest as a wake up call from God. I wondered if God had stopped me down my road to Damascus. When I realized how far I had ran from the presence of God and how much I still needed Him, I decided to leave pride and arrogance far behind.
AND THE NUMBER ONE WAY GOD CHANGED MY HEART???

1. From Christian by name only to True Believer
Proverbs 11:3 The integrity of the upright
will guide them, But the perversity of the
unfaithful will destroy them (NKJV).

Even though I called myself a Christian, I didn’t become a true Christian until age thirty eight. Up until time, I rarely walked with integrity and had not surrendered my life to Jesus Christ. By leading a dishonest life filled with unfaithfulness to my heavenly father, I caused myself years of unnecessary misery and pain. Once I submitted my life to Christ and began to lead an honest life, I found direction and guidance. What changed this was I surrendered my whole heart and and soul to Jesus Christ in that cold and isolated holding jail cell when I thought, "I just lost everything dear to me!"

God Orchestrated Our Thanksgiving Day Celebration!

Thanksgiving Day 2011, I decided not to host a traditional Thanksgiving Day dinner in our home. Instead, our family surrendered the week's vacation and Thanksgiving Day to the Lord. In return, God orchestrated the picture perfect occasion to share His birth in a practical way with my newly saved husband and youngest son.

We had arrived at the KOA with no expectations. However, by day two we had participated in many of the activities offered by the campground. So, my husband offered our son and me a chance to ride in a doonbuggie over the sandy hills nearby. I couldn't wait to take the off road vehicle for a drive. As we drove over the cliffs, hills and valleys, the concept that Jesus was born in a cave lingered in my mind. God must have known my thoughts because we unknowingly followed Him straight to same natural cavities and rock shelters built by His own hand.

Caves on California Mexico Boarder
The drive out to the caves was bumpy, cold and gritty. Yet, it was worth every minute. Scripture immediately came to life as I shared with my wide eyed husband and child how Jesus was more likely born in a cave rather than a manger. To my surprise, and without any hesitation, both my husband and son quickly responded to my words by climbing inside one of the caves and exploring.

Because I am a new believer, I don't pretend to know scripture enough to preach it. Yet, when God reveals yet another truth, I am filled with excitement and can't wait to share my new discovery with others. I can't wait to see what He will reveal next!

May the Good Lord bless you this Thanksgiving Day by filling your heart with His peace and joy!

God used the movie, "The Nativity Story" to touch my heart!

In December 2008, two months after I had surrendered my life to Christ, I was just beginning to comprehend what it meant to be a Christian. Even after having called myself a Christian for 38 years, I knew nothing about my Lord and Savior. But God was patient with me. He even used my love of watching movies to teach me His story.

When I first moved into the apartment, I could only afford Internet, not cable television. I was curious about the man called Jesus Christ. So, I streamed movies through the Internet. Because it was Christmas time, I decided to watch the movie “The Nativity Story.”  The movie wasn't new to me. In fact, for my birthday a few years prior, I had seen the movie with my husband in the theater. Still, I had never watched the birth of Christ with open eyes. Now, as I watched the rich history of Herod the Great being portrayed against the backdrop of the meek village of Nazareth, I was left to ponder what Mary, the mother of God, must have endured in carrying her baby-the Son of God!

I wrapped myself in a blanket and got cozy on the couch while the movie streamed from my laptop, that sat on the footrest at eye level in front of me. Almost immediately, tears started to roll down the side of my face and dripped into my right ear, as I felt deep appreciation for Mary and Joseph. How much faith had it taken for them to travel so far and in such a humble condition? I was moved by the sacrifice that Mary had to make at such a tender, young age by being pregnant with the Lord. Yet, she never grumbled or complained. Nor did she concern herself with what others’ thought. Instead, she simply obeyed the Lord, her God.  I watched history unfold in front of my eyes, and I thought, Joseph too, the earthly father of Christ, would have changed the course of history had he not obeyed the Lord in remaining married to Mary.
It has been three years since I first cried out for Christ to save me from my distress. Now, when I watch the "The Nativity Story," I think about how much my faith has grown. Perhaps the most valuable lesson I have learned is that if I am faithful to God, there is nowhere I can go that would separate me from the bond of His love. So each time I experience another trial, like Mary and Joseph, I obey, knowing that I will prevail by God's mercy if I simply cling to Him.  I want to thank You Lord for all You have done for me and my family and wish You a Happy Birthday. Welcome to our hearts!

Luke 2: 3-16 "So all went to be registered, everyone to his own city. Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David, to be registered with Mary, his betrothed wife, who was with child. So it was, that while they were there, the days were completed for her to be delivered. And she brought forth her firstborn Son, and wrapped Him in swaddling cloths, and laid Him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn. Now there were in the same country shepherds living out in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night. And behold, an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were greatly afraid. Then the angel said to them, "Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be to all people. "For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. "And this [will be] the sign to you: You will find a Babe wrapped in swaddling cloths, lying in a manger." And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying: "Glory to God in the highest, And on earth peace, goodwill toward men!" So it was, when the angels had gone away from them into heaven, that the shepherds said to one another, 'Let us now go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has come to pass, which the Lord has made known to us.' And they came with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the Babe lying in a manger." (NKJV)

Writing a Book was never about becoming rich!

It took yesterday's official book launch for me to search my soul regarding why God led me to write a book. I spent many nights, staying up late, creating videos for YouTube, a personal blog and a facebook page. I even began to read books on how to utilize Inbound Marketing techniques. However, in the process of marking the book, I lost the desire to simply tell my story. I had forgotten the joy I felt in offering a free copy of the book to someone who was experiencing pain.

This morning, my husband woke up before me. He quietly tiptoed into the kitchen to get a Mountain Dew. When I heard him, I opened my eyes. Then, he came to sit by my side. We talked briefly about the change in weather. He said, "It's gorgeous outside." So, I encouraged him to go play a round of golf. I said, "I need to do some soul searching and truly listen to God's direction. Somehow, I have gotten off track."

Then, soon after my husband left, I opened my bible and began to read a chapter. The pages settled on Judges Chapter 5. At first, I read that God doesn't need human help, yet is pleased to accept the services of those use their talents to advance His cause.  As my eyes welled with tears, I spoke to God. "I am sorry I made the past few months about money. Providing hope to others by sharing my testimony is the real reason you allowed me to write the book! I'm sorry God!"

I continued to read and discovered that those who serve the Lord with the talents He has given them will not lose their reward. I started to wonder, "What was I hoping to accomplish with the book launch? Generate a bunch of money? Had I forgotten all those times God handed me unexpected money when I focused my efforts solely on Him?"

By the time I finished writing this blog, everything I heard, saw or read was about money. First, I read a bible verse that told me "Narrow, selfish spirits care not what becomes the church but worry about getting, keeping and saving money." Next, I watched my youngest son dump his piggy bank and complain about how much money he lacked. Then, a commercial for a Capital One credit card aired on the television. The actor said, "Do you want more cash? Who doesn't want more cash?"

I thought back over the past few years. I remembered how I had relied on the Lord to provide for my needs and that He had never let me down. Of course sharing the hope that I have found through Jesus Christ is far more rewarding than any amount of riches this world can offer!
